Schoolchildren from Toledo, Madrid and Huelva participate today in activities to celebrate World Environment Day

Doñana

Today is celebrated on World Environment Day and it is likely that many of your children participate in events prepared for the occasion. We want to highlight the activities that WWF has promoted in two of our emblematic areas for its biodiversity (the Daimiel and Doñana tables)

This emblematic date has been established by the United Nations for the global awareness of the environment, as well as to boost attention and political action in this regard. In doing so, it is intended to give a human face to environmental issues, motivate people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development and show a change of attitude towards environmental issues that should ensure a prosperous and safe future. The National Park of Las Tablas de Daimiel, in Ciudad Real, will be visited today by more than 140 schoolchildren who will contribute to the recovery project that Coca-Cola and WWF are carrying out in the area. The students who will participate in this day of the World Environment Day belong to the winning classes of the contest "Reasons to believe in water", Marist schools, Toledo, and Blas de Otero and Los Sauces, Madrid.

The contest challenged school children to present their slogans about the importance of saving water, with the aim of raising awareness about the need to protect this vital resource. This trip to the Tables of Daimiel, during which there will be a guided tour and a workshop for the construction and placement of nest boxes, serves as the prize and recognition in the contest.

Coca-Cola and WWF carry out a project of forest improvement and promotion of water use efficiency in Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park, which will last until 2015, in coordination with the Autonomous National Parks Organization of the MAGRAMA

WWF will also celebrate World Environment Day at the San Sebastián de Rociana del Condado Public School (Huelva), with a Children's day of traditional agriculture and its environmental aspects in the region. In this case, the objective is to explain to children the importance of taking care of the countryside and the nature that inhabits it.

This activity aims to make students aware of the values of the traditional vineyard in their area and of the cork oaks, as well as the importance of protecting Doñana's flora and fauna species. In particular, respect for the birds and the surrounding forest species will be promoted, through the construction of nest boxes and seedbeds that will be transferred to wine growers of the Rociana del Condado wine cooperative, so that at optimal dates they install it in their farms and so they can improve their biodiversity and naturally control pests.

This day is part of the WWF project "Organic viticulture and cork FSC: a toast for the land", promoted by the National Rural Network, funded by MAGRAMA and FEADER

WWF has focused World Environment Day activities in two emblematic areas for biodiversity and natural resources in Spain. The goal is for new generations to know the values of Doñana and Daimiel, encouraging them to take advantage of their conservation, with small actions at their fingertips.

We hope that these activities are fruitful and that not only children become aware of the need to conserve the biodiversity of the Earth, because although they already told us here that they will be the 'guardians of the Planet', adults should help them with our own example.
