Promotion of breastfeeding after a C-section

The 12 de Octubre Hospital is one of the most committed to the promotion of breastfeeding. He has been a pioneer in implementing the Kangaroo Method for premature babies, which facilitates contact with the mother and breastfeeding, and has been the first to create a Bank of breast milk in the peninsula.

Now he has a new project in Spain aimed at promote breastfeeding in the first hours of life in babies born by a C-section.

We have already seen the importance of early contact between the mother and the baby and of putting it to the chest as soon as it is born, the basic premise of the campaign. Breastfeeding. The sooner breastfeeding begins, the greater the chances of prolonged breastfeeding.

After delivery, women who have had a C-section are transferred to obstetric resuscitation depriving her of contact with her baby. The team in charge of the project is working on non-separation during the recovery of the mothers so that they are not distanced at any time. For now, they do it with scheduled C-sections but plan to extend it to all C-sections.

The benefits of immediate skin-to-skin contact between the two are several. It stimulates the production of hormones involved in the rise of milk and favors the baby to recognize the mother's smell by creating an early bond that improves the newborn's adaptation to the new environment, while also favoring the mother's recovery.

Imagine being so comfortable in mom's gut and suddenly being separated from the mother, manipulated by strangers, bathed and dressed in an unknown environment. The baby only needs to be with his mother, it is his only priority, even if he was born by vaginal delivery or caesarean section.
