4D ultrasound When to do it?

Without a doubt, ultrasound has been a great revolution in prenatal controls. Before her it was unthinkable to see the baby inside the mother's womb.

2D (two-dimensional) ultrasound is the most widespread, but in recent years we have also known 3D (three-dimensional) ultrasound, which allows us to see the appearance of the baby's volume, and the so-called 4D ultrasound that adds the complement of seeing the baby moving in real time.

In the previous post we explained the differences and advantages of the latter compared to the others and now we will explain what is the best time of pregnancy to perform 4D ultrasound and thus be able to enjoy the best images of the unborn baby.

3D and 4D ultrasound can be performed at any time during pregnancy although the best images are obtained between weeks 24 and 30 Well, the conditions are the most appropriate. The proportion of amniotic fluid and the intermediate size of the baby allow you to visualize it better.

Depending on the stage of pregnancy, ultrasound can be performed transvaginally or abdominally. In any case, it is not advisable to do it before the 12th week of gestation because the appearance of the fetus will be very different from its definitive aspect. There are those who are even impressed by the appearance of their baby and it makes no sense to spend the money that is worth the ultrasound to get a disappointment.

From the 12th week and until approximately the 20th, the fetus can be seen in its entirety by seeing trunk and limbs at the same time, but the face features cannot be seen in detail.

On the other hand, when we do it towards the end of the second trimester or the beginning of the third (around the 6th or 7th month) we will not see it complete, but in parts but we will obtain more real images of the baby because its features will be more defined and we can see it, for example , making faces, sucking his finger or sticking out his tongue.

As the third trimester progresses, the baby already looks very similar to the one he will have when he is born, but after week 32 its size, position and a lower proportion of amniotic fluid can make it difficult for us to see the baby clearly or that we can't see his face well.

Therefore, if you decide to have a 4D ultrasound, you should consider it in advance to make an appointment at the time when the conditions are more suitable to see and fully enjoy the first images of your baby.
