At Christmas more than ever, watch out for the small pieces

When we have young children at home, we all take great care to avoid having any domestic accident, babies are very fast!

Christmas is a time when we often meet many adults and children with the resulting uproar, there is much food within reach, many new toys ... For that reason, at Christmas more than at any other time of the year we must be especially careful with small parts that remain within the reach of young children.

Babies explore with their mouths. Some more, others less, but the oral phase is a period in the life of every baby in which we must be very aware, because in a carelessness any small piece, sometimes the least we can imagine, can end up inside his mouth .

It's not about not letting them do anything, but "not to mouth!" Surely it will be a phrase that we repeat more than once a day for many months.

There comes a time when many babies discover that they have more holes in addition to their mouths, holes the sea of curious people that coincidentally fit a lot of things that we know how they enter but we may not be very clear how they can leave.

We at home know this type of baby well, because although our first child was not very given to this type of exploration, the little one is a real specialist in putting things through the nose, by the ears and try even by the navel.

Babies never cease to surprise us. When we believe that we have their environment controlled, they have noticed something we had not seen was there or invented a way to make something dangerous that in theory was not.

Beyond dangerous foods such as nuts or toys that break down into pieces that are clearly too small, sometimes everyday objects can scare us. To give an example, we use a large slate for our work at home, in which we paint with colored markers, special for her, whose cap has a plush to erase. Well, in an oversight he dedicated himself to tear off that cheek with his teeth; when we caught him he was already ruminating it as if it were breadcrumbs.

Babies are fast, very fast! But if we add to this the meetings with many people, preparing dishes or being entertained by opening presents, it may be enough time for a small piece to be within reach.

There are also many new features in sight! Those Christmas trees full of ornaments, the Birth, small ribbons or cards that can carry the gifts, toys that although they do not carry small pieces can detach parts when coming into contact with the saliva of a baby or when falling, for example the stickers or the batteries

Although we have already spent a large part of these parties, we still have Three Kings Day with its roscón! And what is the roscón de Reyes? Well, usually a figurine and a bean, which are the ideal size for a child of a few years (note irony). We, just in case, and in view of our little one's ability, will put them in a safe place before he can even see them.

Anyway, everything is full of small things that one did not repair before! And it is very complicated to have them all controlled. Let them tell us how our blood froze when a couple of days ago the little boy spat a macadamia nut that we don't even know how he could reach.

Our four-year-old son is already an age when he could start playing with toys that have smaller pieces, since he doesn't put anything in his mouth anymore and knows the dangers. However, and at least for now, we have ruled out that these types of toys enter our house because given the background of his little brother and recognizing that it is impossible for us to be aware at all times, who avoids the occasion avoids the danger. For now, toys with small parts will take a long time to enter the house, there will be time!

It is a classic saying, but not by ancient is less true: where is the body, is the danger. It is clear that we cannot be absolutely aware of everything and at all times and, moreover, children need us to allow them some room to explore, to realize on their own that there are certain things that are dangerous.

But that does not mean that it is worth remembering that at Christmas more than ever you have to be especially careful with small pieces. And if we can remove them from their reach, much better!
