More than 32,000 children will be vaccinated for the measles outbreak in Barcelona

Upon detection of 89 measles cases in just three months, the Health Department has considered the application of the vaccine for more than 32,000 babies between the ages of 9 and 15 months.

Unlike the Community of Madrid, where an outbreak was also detected last May for which the measles vaccine was indicated to babies at 6 months of age, the vaccination schedules, in this case of Catalonia, administer the first dose at 15 months.

The vaccination strategy that will begin next Thursday in the health centers of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, aims to minimize the risk of infection of this infectious disease by administering a total of 32,578 triple viral vaccines XRP (measles, rubella and mumps), for which the health department has allocated 130,000 euros to buy 20,000 additional doses. The Department of Health will inform the parents of babies from 9 to 12 months by letter, about the situation and about the center where they should go to apply the vaccine to their baby.

Marina Geli, the Minister of Health of the Generalitat, calls for calm before the alarm created in the population, and says that this measure is temporary, although they will assess the possibility of advancing the vaccine on the calendar due to cases of measles in Babies under 15 months.
